Commissioners choose Rich Wallen to lead Grant PUD

An experienced manager, Wallen formerly headed the utility's operations divisions

EPHRATA, Wash – Grant PUD commissioners Tuesday unanimously chose Rich Wallen as the utility's new general manager and chief executive officer.

Wallen has served as interim general manager since Jan. 1, after former general manager Kevin Nordt stepped down to focus on his health and take on a new role ensuring the utility a reliable energy supply.

Commissioners pointed to Wallen's knowledge, experience gained at Grant PUD and benefit of mentoring by Nordt for their decision.

"This process with the commission is part of what we've supported to bring folks up through the ranks that are part of this PUD family," Commissioner Tom Flint said, pointing to Wallen's credentials in the military and energy industry. "Rich has been very open and transparent… I'm happy to have you on board."

"I can't thank this team in here enough," Wallen told commissioners and fellow executive managers. "Everybody's been willing to help out, train and calibrate me when I needed to be calibrated… We've got a great group of folks on board, moving the District in a positive direction."

Wallen joined Grant PUD in June 2017 as managing director of Power Production, overseeing hydropower operations and ancillary hydro programs. In his most recent role as chief operations officer his responsibilities expanded to include power delivery, safety and operational excellence.

Wallen is a 30-year veteran of the energy industry. He grew up in West Virginia and joined the Navy. He spent more than a decade in the military, eventually becoming the chief mechanical operator aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. He holds a bachelor's degree from West Virginia University and a master's degree in business from Clayton State University. He and his wife, Dara, have five children.

Los Comisionados eligen a Rich Wallen para dirigir PUD Grant

Wallen es un directivo con experiencia, que anteriormente dirigió las divisiones de operaciones de la empresa.

EPHRATA, Wash – Los comisionados de Grant PUD eligieron el martes por unanimidad a Rich Wallen como nuevo gerente general y director ejecutivo de la empresa.

Wallen ha sido gerente general provisional desde el 1 de enero, después de que el anterior gerente general, Kevin Nordt, dejara el cargo para centrarse en su salud y asumir un nuevo papel que garantice a la empresa un suministro energético fiable.

Los comisionados señalaron para su decisión los conocimientos de Wallen, la experiencia adquirida en Grant PUD y el beneficio de la tutoría de Nordt.

"Este proceso con la comisión es parte de lo que hemos apoyado para que la gente suba de rango y forme parte de esta familia del PUD", dijo el comisionado Tom Flint, señalando las credenciales de Wallen en la industria militar y energética. "Rich ha sido muy abierto y transparente... Estoy feliz de tenerlo a bordo".

"No puedo agradecer lo suficiente a este equipo de aquí", dijo Wallen a los comisionados y a sus compañeros de la dirección ejecutiva. Tenemos un gran grupo de personas a bordo, moviendo el Distrito en una dirección positiva".

Wallen se incorporó a Grant PUD en junio de 2017 como director ejecutivo de Producción de Energía, supervisando las operaciones hidroeléctricas y los programas hidroeléctricos auxiliares. En su puesto más reciente como oficial en jefe de operaciones, sus responsabilidades se ampliaron para incluir el suministro de energía, la seguridad y la excelencia operativa.

Wallen es un veterano de 30 años en la industria energética. Creció en Virginia Occidental y se alistó en la Marina. Pasó más de una década en el ejército, llegando a ser el operador mecánico jefe a bordo del U.S.S. Enterprise. Es licenciado por la Universidad de Virginia Occidental y tiene un máster en negocios por la Universidad Estatal de Clayton. Él y su esposa, Dara, tienen cinco hijos.
