Solar Races & Energy Fair
Each May, Grant County fifth-grade students are invited to participate in the annual Solar Races & Energy Fair. The event, which is held at Big Bend Community College, is a collaborative effort put on by Grant PUD, REC Silicon, Puget Sound Energy, Moses Lake School District and Big Bend Community College.
Students prepare for the races by constructing their own solar-powered vehicle with kits provided by REC Silicon and Grant PUD in class before attending the event. Then they race against their classmates on specially-designed tracks.
Along with the races, the students also visit a variety of stations where they learn about renewable energy in the region. Grant PUD gives a presentation about hydropower, Puget Sound Energy teaches the students about windpower and REC Silicon Inc., demonstrates how it creates silicon for solar panels at its Moses Lake plant. There are also other hands-on stations that gave the students an opportunity to learn how humans harness and use renewable energy. The students’ instructors use the event as a supplement to their science and math curriculum.
