For action preventing spread of July 5 wildfire
EPHRATA, Wash.— Grant PUD Commissioner Larry Schaapman, of Quincy, was presented on Dec. 3 the Washington PUD Association’s Good Samaritan Award for his actions in helping to prevent the spread of a wildfire threatening his neighbors this past summer.
In the early hours of July 5, Schaapman, who is farmer in the Quincy Valley, saw that a fast-moving wildfire, whipped by strong winds, was threatening homes and property of his neighbors. Schaapman quickly hooked up a disc implement to one of his tractors parked near his home and began plowing a fire break to help successfully contain the flames. His quick thinking and determination was credited by firefighters for helping to protect the lives and property of his neighbors.
Schaapman’s award was presented to him during WPUDA’s annual meeting in SeaTac on Dec. 3. The Good Samaritan Award is given annually to PUD officials and employees who demonstrate meritorious action in a life-threatening situation.
Schaapman has served as the commissioner for Grant PUD District No. 3 since 2012. His district includes the communities of Quincy, George, Royal City and Mattawa, as well as their outlying areas.
