Grant County fifth-grade students participate in the 2014 Solar Car Races & Energy Fair at Big Bend.

at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake.

Students prepared for the races by constructing their own solar-powered vehicle with kits provided by REC Silicon and Grant PUD in class before attending the event. They brought their cars to race on specially-designed tracks against their classmates. Along with the races, the students also visited a variety of stations where they learned about renewable energy in the region. Grant PUD gave a presentation about hydropower, Puget Sound Energy taught the students about windpower and REC Silicon Inc., demonstrated how it creates silicon for solar panels at its Moses Lake plant. There were also other hands-on stations that gave the students an opportunity to learn how humans harness and use renewable energy. The students’ instructors used the event as a supplement to their science and math curriculum.

The Solar Car Races & Energy Fair is a collaborative effort put on by Grant PUD, REC Silicon, Puget Sound Energy, Moses Lake School District and Big Bend Community College.
